From Genesis to Revelation God’s Word is filled with His promises of healing. In fact, there is a healing river that flows through the pages of the entire Bible! As you read God’s Word, one thing is very clear, it is God’s will for you and me to be healed!
However, when it comes to enjoying and walking in God’s provision of health and healing, knowledge of His will is only half the battle. You see, it is one thing to know that God has promised you something, but it is another thing to know how to receive what He has promised!
God is not in control over who is healed anymore than He is in control over who is saved. Healing, like salvation, has already been provided to all through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Psalm 107:20 declares, “He sent His Word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” According to John 1:14, Jesus is the Word that became flesh. As you can see, healing is not something that God gives today, rather healing is SOMEONE Whom God gave two thousand years ago. Your healing is not in your future, your healing is in your past!
God has already done His part. Now He waits for you to do yours. Stop waiting for God to heal you and learn how to receive the healing that He has already provided. Healing, like salvation must be received.
In the New Testament God has established five methods whereby the sick can receive their healing. Just think about it! God wants you and me to be healed so much, that He gave us more than one way to get it!
#1 YOU CAN BE HEALED THROUGH FAITH IN GOD’S WORD
In Matthew 8:8 the centurion said to Jesus, “Speak the WORD ONLY, and my servant shall be healed.” Jesus being amazed at this man’s faith said, “I have not found so GREAT FAITH, no, not in Israel.” The kind of faith that stands only on the Word of God, being unaffected by circumstances, is called “GREAT FAITH”. Oh, that we all had this level of faith!
According to 2 Thessalonians 1:3 our faith can grow. In other words, you can increase the level of faith that you have. Jesus Himself spoke of three levels of faith. He spoke of people having “no faith” (Mark 4:40), of people having “little faith” (Matthew 8:26), and of people having “great faith” (Matthew 8:10). You can increase your level of faith by feeding upon God’s Word (Romans 10:17) and praying in other tongues (Jude 20).
#2 YOU CAN BE HEALED THROUGH THE LAYING ON OF HANDS
In Mark 16:18 Jesus said that all believers would, “Lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Unfortunately, this method of receiving healing has been misunderstood and misapplied. When rightly applied, this method will work to bring physical healing to the sick 100 percent of the time.
First of all, contrary to popular teaching today, not every believer can lay hands upon the sick and see them healed. Only Spirit-filled believers have this power! (See Acts 1:8.) If you read the entire chapter of Mark 16, you will notice that the same believers who lay hands upon the sick are the ones who also speak in other tongues. Only Holy Ghost, Spirit-filled, tongue-talkers have the power of the Lord to preach the Gospel with signs following.
Secondly, in context, Jesus is referring to the signs that accompany the believer as they preach the gospel to the LOST. The sick in this instance are the unsaved. One of the reasons for our lack of success when laying hands upon the sick is that we have been laying hands upon sick Christians, instead of sick unbelievers. If the Christian would lay hands upon the unsaved in the context of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them, they would have a 100 percent success rate!
#3 YOU CAN BE HEALED THROUGH THE PRAYER OF FAITH AND THE ANOINTING WITH OIL BY THE ELDERS OF THE CHURCH
Another method for receiving healing is found in James 5:14-15. This method has been given exclusively for those in the church to receive healing. It declares, “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick…”
There are 5 instructions given in this passage that must be followed in order for this method to bring healing: (1) This method is exclusively given to the Christian, not to the unsaved. (2) The one to call for the elders of the church must be the one who is sick, not vice versa. (3) The sick must call for the elders of the church, those called and anointed by the Lord to the five-fold ministry of Ephesians 4:11, not for the deacons or lay ministers. (4) The elders must pray the prayer of faith over the sick. This of course requires that the elder praying believe that it is ALWAYS God’s will to heal the sick. (5) The elders are to anoint the sick who called for them with oil in the name of the Lord.
#4 YOU CAN BE HEALED THROUGH THE GIFTS OF HEALING
1 Corinthians chapter 12 mentions the nine gifts, or manifestations, of the Holy Spirit. Among them is the “gifts of healing”. When it comes to the gifts of the Spirit, we must remember that they operate only as the Spirit wills. (See 1 Corinthians 12:11.) In other words, we are not in control over them. The gifts of the Spirit have more to do with God’s sovereign mercy than our own faith. Not everyone will be healed through the gifts of healing, but everyone can be healed.
#5 YOU CAN BE HEALED THROUGH THE SPECIAL HEALING ANOINTING
The Word of God is clear that God calls some of His ministers to a healing ministry, giving them a special healing anointing to minister to the sick. This is found in 1 Corinthians 12:28 where it says, “And God hath set SOME in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that MIRACLES AND GIFTS OF HEALINGS, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.”
In January 1991, just after I met the Holy Spirit as a Person while reading Benny Hinn’s book, “Good Morning Holy Spirit”, I had an incredible experience with the Lord where the palms of my hands burned with what felt like a hot coal of fire. The Lord spoke very clearly to me in that moment saying, “That is a special healing anointing. I have called you to a healing ministry.” From that time I began to witness God’s healing power flow out of me as I prayed for the sick.
