“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17
The truth that I want you to see from this portion of God’s Word is this – spiritual death leads to physical death. When God created Adam and Eve He never intended for them to die. Before their rebellion they never knew one sick day. It wasn’t until after sin entered into the earth that sickness took hold on the human race. Sin gave birth to sickness.
Here God warns Adam that if He disobeys His command and eats of the forbidden tree, the very day that he eats of it he will die. Now Adam did not drop dead physically the same day that he and Eve ate of the tree. But they did die spiritually. Sin took hold of their nature and they hid themselves from God’s presence.
However, it was spiritual death that led to Adam’s eventual physical death. After all, how could a man’s body that God had personally formed with His own hands break down and die? Simple, sin gave birth to sickness, which eventually leads to physical death. Sickness is a symptom of physical death.
You see, sickness is not the result of a physical condition, but of a spiritual condition. If sickness were merely physical in nature, then don’t you think that with all of the advances in today’s medicine and technology that we would be able to eradicate disease from the human race? Doctors will never be able to totally eradicate sickness and disease from this planet because the root cause of sickness is not physical, but spiritual. Sickness exists because of a spiritual condition called the fall of man, and therefore it can only be cured by a spiritual solution called the redemption of man.
CONFESSION: Through Jesus Christ I have been redeemed from spiritual death. Sickness and disease no longer has a right to my body.
