How God Works

How God Works
January 2, 2015 Joel Grantham

You have probably heard it said that, “The Lord works in mysterious ways, His wonders to behold.”  Or maybe something like, “You just never know what God is going to do.”  Hopefully, you are aware of the fact that these statements are nowhere to be found in Scripture.  As a matter of fact, as I will show you, they are completely untrue!

It seems that many are confused when it comes to how God works.  Is it possible for us to understand God and His ways?  Is God as mysterious as people claim?

In Psalm 103:7 it declares, “He made known His WAYS unto Moses, His acts unto the children of Israel.”  If Moses could know God’s ways, then surely it must be possible for us to know His ways as well!  Jesus came to reveal to us the MYSTERY of God’s will and ways.  In Mark 4:11, He told His disciples, “Unto you it is given to know the MYSTERY of the Kingdom of God.”

Those who say things like, “you just never know what God is going to do” are revealing that they do NOT know the Holy Spirit.  They may even quote Scriptures like 1 Corinthians 2:9 to try and prove their misguided point of view.  “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.”  This certainly seems to back up the statement, “You just never know what God is going to do!”

However, we must learn not to take Scripture out of its context.  Let’s continue to read the next verse.  1 Corinthians 2:10 declares, “BUT (here it comes) God HATH REVEALED THEM UNTO US BY HIS SPIRIT…”  It is clear that those who know the Person of the Holy Spirit also know “the things which God hath prepared for them.”  After all, Jesus said in John 16:13 that the Holy Spirit, “Will show you things to come.”

Perhaps you have even heard someone quote the Scripture saying, “God’s ways are higher than our ways.”  Usually, those who quote this verse interpret it to mean that there is no way that a human being can ever understand how God works.  While it is true, the Bible does say that God’s ways are higher than our ways, let’s look closely to see just who God is referring to.  Does God mean that His ways are higher than every person, or just a certain group of people?

To find the answer, let’s look at Isaiah 55:7-9.  Verse 7 reads, “Let THE WICKED forsake his way. And THE UNRIGHTEOUS man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”  Now, verse 8 and 9 declare, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

God is not talking about everybody here!  He is only talking about the wicked; those who are unrighteous!  In other words, before you and I were saved, our ways were not God’s ways and our thoughts were not God’s thoughts.  As a matter of fact the Bible tells us in Psalm 10:4 that the wicked do not keep God in their thoughts.  But Romans 8:5 tells us that, “They that are after the Spirit do MIND the things of the Spirit.”

Nowhere in these verses does it say that we CANNOT KNOW God’s ways!  As a matter of fact, if you continue reading, God even begins to tell us His ways.  In Isaiah 55:10-11, God reveals how He works.

EVERYTHING THAT GOD DOES, HE DOES THROUGH HIS WORD!  God never works outside of His Word, but always in the framework of His Word.

How did God create the heavens and the earth?  Hebrews 11:3 tells us, “That the worlds were framed by THE WORD OF GOD.”  Hebrews 1:3 even tells us that it is by the power of His Word that He is holding all things together!  Never forget, it was God’s Word that created this world and it is God’s Word that governs this world!

But what about God’s sovereignty?  It depends on what you mean when you say that God is sovereign. If by sovereign you mean that God can do anything that He wants to do, anytime that He wants to do it, then you are wrong!  God CANNOT do EVERYTHING!  There is one thing that He cannot do.  Titus 1:2 declares that God cannot lie.  It doesn’t say that He “WILL NOT LIE,” it says that “HE CANNOT LIE.”  Hebrews 6:18 tells us that it is “IMPOSSIBLE for God to lie.”  He did not say that it was improbable.  He said that it was IMPOSSIBLE!

You see God’s word IS God’s sovereign will revealed to humanity!  God’s WILL and God’s WORD are one and the same!  God’s Word will never change.  Psalm 119:89 declares, “Forever O Lord, Thy Word is settled in heaven.”  In Matthew 24:35, Jesus revealed the power of His Word when he said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away but My Word shall not pass away.”

God CAN do no more and no less than what His Word says that He CAN do.  It is also clear that God WILL DO no more and no less than what His Word says that HE WILL DO.  God has revealed His eternal will through His written Word.  God is not making it up from day to day!  We can know exactly what God is going to do by looking at what He said He will do in His written Word!  Those who say that God’s ways are mysterious are telling us that they do not understand the Scriptures.

It is very important that you and I understand that God is not in control of everything that happens on this planet.  Remember, God governs through His Word.  God has established certain spiritual laws that govern everything that you and I receive from Him.  Just as there are natural laws that govern this natural world, so also there are spiritual laws that govern the spiritual world.  The Scriptures reveal that there are FOUR eternal spiritual laws.  Our understanding of these 4 laws will greatly impact what you and I receive from God.

Romans 3:27 says, “Where is boasting then?  It is excluded.  By what law?  Of works?  Nay; but by the law of faith.”

What is the law of faith?  The best definition of the law of faith is found in Matthew 9:29.  Here Jesus tells two blind men who are seeking healing, “According to your faith be it unto you.”  The law of faith states that it will not always be unto you according to God’s WILL.  But it will always be unto you according to your faith.

It can be God’s will for you to have something, like salvation or healing, and you still not have it.  It is through faith that we receive God’s promises.  Hebrews 11:6 declares, “He that cometh to God MUST BELIEVE…”

Galatians 6:7 declares, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

The law of sowing and reaping is also called the law of “giving and receiving” in Philippians 4:15, as well as the law of “seedtime and harvest” in Genesis 8:22.  This law is closely related to the law of faith and works in every area of life.  However, this is the CHIEF law that governs our financial prosperity.

In Romans 8:2 The Apostle Paul writes, “For the LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

The Holy Spirit is a spiritual law.  The Holy Spirit is essential to our walk with God!

  • Before we were saved, the Holy Spirit convicted us of our sin and brought us to Christ (John 16:8).
  • As a matter of fact it is by His power that we are saved (Romans 8:9).
  • Once we are saved, He empowers us to live holy through sanctification (2 Thessalonians 2:13).
  • He fills us with power so we can serve our Lord (Acts 1:8).
  • It is through the Spirit that we can fellowship with God (2 Corinthians 13:14).
  • He leads us (Romans 8:14)
  • He teaches us (John 14:26)
  • And one day soon, He will rapture us (Romans 8:11)!

In John 13:34 Jesus said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you. That ye also love one another.”

The law of love is God’s highest law!  It supersedes all other spiritual laws.  James 2:8 calls it the ROYAL LAW.  None of the other laws work correctly unless you are properly operating in the law of love.

The law of faith only operates properly through the law of love because Galatians 5:6 declares, “faith which worketh by love.”

The law of giving and receiving will not work properly unless the motive behind our giving is love.  John 3:16 shows us that LOVE must be the motive for giving when it says, “For God so LOVED the world that He GAVE…”

The law of the Spirit will not function in our life with power unless we are operating in the law of love.  Romans 5:5 declares, “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.”
