Day 86: Sin And Sickness

Day 86: Sin And Sickness
March 26, 2015 Joel Grantham

“But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction; blood-thirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in You.”  Psalm 55:23

Over and over again the Scriptures promise long life for those who obey and love the Lord.  In Deuteronomy 30:20 God is revealed as not only our healer (Exodus 15:26) but also as our life and LENGTH OF DAYS.

However, as you examine the Scriptures closely, you will begin to discover that there are things that we can do to shorten our life as well as lengthen it.  Proverbs 10:27 says, “The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.”  There is a reward for living a holy life, not only in eternity, but in this life as well.  And I believe that part of that reward is a long and healthy life.  1 Timothy 4:8 says, “Godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life THAT NOW IS and of that which is to come.”

The Scripture gives several reasons that a person gets sick.  One of those reasons is sin.  I do not believe that the reason every person is sick is because they have un-confessed and unrepented sin in their life.  But the Bible does teach that sin opens the door to sickness and disease.  I believe that this is why James 5:15 says, “And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.  And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”

One key to living a long and healthy life is to obey God’s written Word.  Proverbs 3:1-2 declares, “My son, do not forget My law, but let your heart keep My commandments; for LENGTH OF DAYS and LONG LIFE and peace will they add to you.”  God’s Word is clear, those who live according to His commands have the privilege of enjoying His promise of a long and healthy life; but those who live their life in rebellion to God’s Word do not have access to His promise of a long and healthy life.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to obey Your holy Word.  I thank You for giving me a healthy long life on this earth.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
