“And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians. So Asa rested with his fathers; he died in the forty-first year of his reign.” 2 Chronicles 16:12-13
In Exodus 15:26 God made a covenant of health and healing with the children of Israel when He revealed Himself as Jehovah Ropha, which means the Lord your healer. After that day, there is no record of anyone ever being sick among all the people of Israel, except for those who disobeyed God’s laws. There wasn’t even one doctor during the entire time that they wandered in the wilderness. After all, there wasn’t any need for a doctor because everyone was walking in divine health.
Did you know that it wasn’t until King Solomon broke God’s commandment by marrying Pharaoh’s daughter that sickness and disease was reintroduced to the people of Israel? (see 1 kings 3:1.) And this only happened after Solomon’s new wife reintroduced the ancient art of Egyptian medicine to the land. Once the people began trusting in doctors and medicine for their health and healing, sickness became common place among God’s people.
Nowhere in the Scriptures are we told to seek an earthly physician if we are sick. After all, why would any of God’s people need an earthly physician when we have a Great Heavenly Physician? We are however, told to call for the Elders of the church, and have them anoint us with oil, praying the prayer of faith over us. One should never call the doctor BEFORE they have called the Elders!
I think today’s scripture is very clear. King Asa could have been healed had he sought the Lord for his healing instead of seeking the doctors. Sadly, many believers today are just like King Asa. When symptoms of sickness arise they run to the doctor for help BEFORE they put into practice the instructions for receiving healing from God as outlined in His Word.
Many Christians just give God lip service when it comes to trusting Him for their healing when all the time they are truly trusting in the help of man- the doctor. I am constantly amazed at how many Christians will travel long distances to see a “specialist” but will not even go to a “healing service” conducted by an anointed man or woman whom God has raised up to bring healing to His people!
Today, do not put your trust in man, but rather put your trust in God. He is and always has been Jehovah Ropha, the Lord your healer!
Confession: Jesus Christ is my Great Physician. By His stripes I am healed!
