“Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land the spring of the year. So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.” 2 kings 13:20-21
In 1 Corinthians 12:1 the Apostle Paul, when writing to the church about the power of the Holy Spirit, began by saying, “I do not want you to be ignorant.” Sadly, there is still much ignorance in the church when it comes to understanding the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
What is the anointing? Simply put, the anointing is the power of God as manifested through the Person of the Holy Spirit. The anointing is NOT the Holy Spirit, it is simply His power. The Person of the Holy Spirit is experienced through the Presence of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit is experienced through the power of God.
In this portion of God’s Word we can clearly see that the anointing of the Holy Spirit is a real substance that can be stored and transmitted to others. It is a heavenly material. In Mark 5:30 and in Mark 6:56 we learn that the anointing was stored in Jesus’ clothes and transmitted to the sick when they touched Him. The anointing was also stored in Peter’s shadow, Paul’s handkerchiefs and Moses’ rod. It is most commonly transmitted to another person through the laying on of hands.
The word “anointing” means to smear or cover with oil. Much like olive oil, it will dissipate over time if it is not continually refreshed. However, if a person continues to soak in God’s anointing day after day, over time it will begin to flow out of them even into their clothes and shadow. This is what the Bible means when in Psalms 23 it says, “You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.”
Elisha the prophet had received a double measure of the anointing that Elijah the prophet had ministered with. That anointing was so thick on him that it eventually soaked into his very bones. Even after he died, the residue of the anointing remained in his bones!
When the Israelites were forced to bury a man in haste because of a band of raiders coming their way, they lowered his body on the bones of Elisha. As soon as the dead man’s body touched the bones of Elisha, coming in contact with the anointing, he revived!
The anointing is the greatest power in the world! It is greater than any sickness and any disease. One of the main ways that God brings healing to the sick is through the special healing anointing. This healing anointing is carried in some of those who He has called to the ministry (see 1 Corinthians 12:28).
The anointing that sets the captives free never comes directly from God to you. It always comes from God to one of His ministers, and then through the minister to the one who is sick. God heals THROUGH His body, not around it. One way to receive healing is by finding someone whom God has called to the healing ministry giving them a special healing anointing. Get to their meetings and make contact with that anointing, and you will be healed!
Confession: Thank you Lord for the anointing of the Holy Spirit. I believe that you are still calling and anointing men and women today with a special healing anointing.
