Day 55: Who’s First, God Or The Doctor?

Day 55: Who’s First, God Or The Doctor?
February 26, 2015 Joel Grantham

“Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria, and was injured; so he sent messengers and said to them, ‘Go, inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this injury.’  But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, ‘Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the King of Samaria, and say to them, “Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’  Now therefore, thus says the Lord: ‘You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’”  2 kings1:2-4

The truth in this portion of God’s Word is undeniable!  Many people die with sickness and disease because they do not seek the Lord for healing.  Sadly our society has grown so dependant and accustomed to medical doctors and pharmaceuticals that people today seek God as a last resort when they are in need of healing, instead of putting their faith and trust in His Word first.

Many times those who are sick give God lip-service by saying that they are trusting Him for their healing, when actually they are trusting the doctor.  I have often heard it said by those who are terminally ill that, “All that they can do now is trust God and pray.”  How sad that only after the doctors have tried all that they could do and failed, do people then say that they will trust God!  Why not trust God first before you go to the doctors?

Please do not hear what I am not saying.  I am not against doctors and taking medicine.  But I am against TRUSTING in doctors and in medicine for our healing.  One should not consult an earthly physician for help until he has first sought his Heavenly Physician with all of his heart.

If the Christian will learn to completely depend upon God for their health, they will have no need for an earthly physician.  Nowhere in Scripture does God’s Word ever instruct us to go to a doctor.  We do not even need them because in Exodus 15:26 God said that He was Jehovah Rhopha, our Great Physician!

I am thankful for doctors because they do help alleviate some suffering in this world.  For one thing, doctors can help keep people alive long enough so that they can learn to trust in the promises of God’s Word for their health and healing.

We all need to honestly evaluate ourselves in this area.  When symptoms of sickness and disease arise, are our first thoughts to call the doctor or to call upon God?  I believe that a Christian should never call the doctor until they have first called the elders of the church according to James 5:15 & 16.

Confession:  Lord, You are my Great Physician.  I put all of my faith and trust in You for my health and healing.
