Day 5: A Precedent Setting Event

Day 5: A Precedent Setting Event
January 4, 2015 Joel Grantham

“So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants.  Then they bore children.”  Genesis 20:17 (NKJV)

Genesis 20:17 is a very important verse in the Bible because it is the very first time that a miracle of physical healing is mentioned.  God’s healing of Abimelech and his wife in answer to Abraham’s prayer is a precedent setting event in Scripture.  It establishes a precedent, or standard, for all future truth relating to healing.

The first thing that we learn about God in this verse is that God CAN HEAL our sicknesses and diseases.  Before this event we did not know if God could heal the sick because He had never done so.  Jeremiah 32:17 declares, “There is nothing too hard for Thee.”

The second thing that we learn about God as it relates to the healing of our bodies is that it is God’s will to heal the sick.  We know this because God responded favorably to Abraham’s prayer for Abimelech and his family.  If it was not God’s will to heal the sick, He would not have done so.

The last truth that this verse of Scripture establishes is that God heals the sick in response to our prayers and our faith.  Note that God only healed Abimelech after Abraham prayed, not before.  James 4:2 says, “you do not have because you do not ask.”  In John 16:24 Jesus taught, “Ask, and you will receive.”  And in Matthew 7:8 it says, “Everyone that asks receives.”

Confession:  Nothing is too hard for My God.  God can and God will heal me when I ask Him in faith!
