“And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.” Joshua 14:10-11
Growing old does not mean that you have to grow weaker! In our society today we use old age as an excuse for sickness and disease. However, sickness and disease is never God’s will no matter how old one may be!
What was Caleb’s secret? How at age eighty-five was he still going strong, as spry as a forty year old man? If you remember, Caleb was one of the twelve spies that Moses sent into the Promised Land. When they returned from spying out the land, the Bible says that ten of them brought back an evil report to Moses. All they could talk about was how strong and how big the people of that land were. But Caleb stilled the people and spoke up saying, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” (See Numbers 13:30-32.)
That day God promised that none of the Israelites above the age of 20 would ever go into the Promised Land. Instead, they would have to wander in the desert for forty years until they all died. Caleb and Joshua, the two spies who brought a good report, would be the only ones from that generation to live in the Promised Land.
Caleb’s secret can be found in Numbers 14:24 where God says, “But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring him into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.” What kind of spirit did Caleb have? He had a spirit of faith! (See 2 Corinthians 4:13.)
Instead of focusing on the problems, the giants, Caleb kept his faith in God’s Word. And when the test came, he maintained a good confession. His confession of faith carried him over into the Promised Land forty-five years later. After all of his friends and family had died off, Caleb was still going strong at age eighty-five! All because of His faith in God’s Word!
Confession: I am well able to overcome sickness and disease because I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
