Day 41: No Such Thing As A Blessing In Disguise

Day 41: No Such Thing As A Blessing In Disguise
February 9, 2015 Joel Grantham

“Moreover He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you.  Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed.”  Deuteronomy 28:60-61

Deuteronomy 28 is one of the most fascinating chapters in the entire Bible.  I encourage you to take the time to read the entire chapter.  In this amazing portion of Scripture God lists all of the blessings and curses that will come upon those who obey or disobey the Mosaic Law.  One of the curses mentioned, found in verses 60 and 61, is “every sickness and every plague.”

Nowhere in God’s Word is sickness ever called a blessing.  I’ll even go one step further than that; nowhere in God’s Word is sickness ever called a blessing in disguise!  There is not even a category in this chapter for “blessings in disguise”.   There are only two categories listed, one for the blessings and another for the curses.  Sickness and disease is not a blessing from God given to teach us things, but a curse from the devil sent to destroy us.

One of my favorite verses in the entire Bible is found in Galatians 3:13 which says, “Christ has redeemed us from the CURSE OF THE LAW.”  Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross of Calvary, we have been redeemed from the curse of sickness and disease.  God does not give, nor does He use, sickness and disease to teach us things.  God will never use anything that Jesus died to redeem us from to teach us a lesson!

I want you to notice something that you may have overlooked in Galatians 3:13.  Did you notice that it doesn’t say anything about being redeemed from the “blessings” of the Law?  Jesus Christ took away the curses of the Law, but He left all of the blessings for you and me to enjoy!

Hebrews 8:6 tells us that the New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant because it was “established upon BETTER PROMISES.”  Under the Old Covenant God clearly promised healing to every Jew who followed the Mosaic Law.  If it was not God’s will to heal all under the New Covenant, then it would not be better than the Old Covenant.  It is clearly God’s will for you to be healed from “every sickness and every plague!”

Confession:  I have been redeemed from the curse of sickness and disease.
