Day 29: Look And Live

Day 29: Look And Live
January 28, 2015 Joel Grantham

“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”  So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.” Numbers 21:8-9

Once again, the children of Israel had sinned.  Because of their sin, serpents entered into their camp and bit many of them.  God’s remedy for them is a powerful picture of our redemption in Christ Jesus!

One thing that you need to know about the Old Testament is that there are no meaningless details in God’s Word.  Everything has meaning!  Hebrews 10:1 tells us that the Old Testament Scriptures are a shadow of the good things to come under the New Covenant through Christ Jesus.  We can learn a lot about our new covenant rights and privileges by reading the Old Testament scriptures.

The serpent on the pole is symbolic of Jesus Christ dying on the cross for us.  In John 3:14 Jesus said, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”  When I was young I did not understand why Jesus would be represented by a serpent because a serpent is always symbolic of Satan in the Scriptures.  But then the Holy Spirit reminded me that in Galatians 3:13 it says that on the cross Christ became a CURSE for us.

Interestingly, the people were healed PHYSICALLY when they beheld the serpent on the pole.  Because of the cross, physical healing is available to all who will look in faith to Jesus on the cross.  Even today, the serpent on the pole is used as the logo by the medical profession!

The truth in this scripture is abundantly clear!  Jesus not only took our sin, but He also took all of our sicknesses and our diseases with Him when He died on the cross.  Because of Calvary, you can be healed!

Confession:  Thank you Lord for becoming a curse for me.  I believe that you paid for my sins and my sicknesses on the cross.  By your stripes I am healed!
