Day 27: Jesus Is Our High Priest

Day 27: Jesus Is Our High Priest
January 27, 2015 Joel Grantham

“Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people.  So he put in the incense and made atonement for the people.  And he stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped.”  Numbers 16:47-48

Once again the children of Israel rebelled against the Lord, this time by complaining and challenging the leadership that He had established through Moses and Aaron.  The result of their sin released a deadly plague that threatened to kill them all.  Thankfully Moses had instructed Aaron, the high priest, to take a censer with the fire from the altar and go into the camp to make an atonement for the people.  When Aaron did so, the plague was reversed.

In this portion of God’s Word we find a perfect “type and shadow” of our redemption from sin and sickness through Jesus Christ.  Because of sin, sickness has entered the human race much like this plague that almost wiped out the Israelites.  Like the Israelites, we could not atone for our own sin.  So Jesus, our High Priest, made an atonement for us by offering His own body as a sacrifice for the sin of the world.  By doing so He made it possible for us to be healed of every sickness and every disease.

Hebrews 3:1 tells us that Jesus is our High Priest.  Because of sin, the human race was separated from God.  We needed someone to stand between us and God like Aaron did for the people of Israel.  1 Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and man, the Man Christ Jesus.”  Thankfully, Jesus made an eternal atonement for us, forever paying the price of our sin and sickness.  He stopped the plague of sickness that came upon the world because of sin.

I love Hebrews 4:15 because it says, “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”  In other words, Jesus not only cares about what you are going through, He also understands it.  He sympathizes with you!  You are not in this alone!  You have a High Priest Who has made an atonement for you!  The plague of sickness in your life has been stopped!

Confession:  Jesus, thank You for being my High Priest and for making an atonement for my sin and sickness.
