“As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitude marveled, saying, ‘It was never seen like this in Israel!’” Matthew 9:32-33
In Acts 10:38 and other scriptures we learn that all sickness is of the devil. But many times sickness is the direct result of the working of a demon spirit called the spirit of infirmity. Luke 13:11 confirms this when it sates, “And behold, there was a woman who had a SPIRIT OF INFIRMITY eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.”
There is a difference between demonic possession and demonic oppression. Demonic possession is when a demon spirit possesses your body, soul and spirit. Demonic oppression occurs when a demon spirit attaches itself to only your soul and body. A born again Christian cannot be demon possessed because the Holy Spirit lives in their spirit man. 1 Corinthians 6:17 tells us, “He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” The Scriptures are very clear that the Holy Spirit and a demon spirit cannot dwell together in the same place; for in 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 it declares, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
In order for a person who is oppressed by a spirit of infirmity to receive healing the demon spirit must be cast out. In Mark 16:17 the very first sign that Jesus said would follow believers who preach the gospel is that they would cats out demons! I find that interesting because in today’s church you do not hear much at all about demons, much less how to cast them out. However, in Luke 11:20-26 Jesus explains in detail how demonic possession and oppression work and deals with how to cast them out.
There are two ways that you can know if a sickness is the result of a spirit of infirmity or not. The first way is, if the Holy Spirit reveals it to you supernaturally. The second way that you can know is by looking at the specific characteristics of a sickness caused by a spirit of infirmity.
Sicknesses that are the result of a spirit of infirmity have several characteristics. First of all, they will be chronic. In Luke 13:11 it says that the woman had the problem for eighteen long years. People who suffer from a chronic illness, or reoccurring illness, may be afflicted by an evil spirit. Many times sicknesses that run in the family, being passed down from one generation to the next, is the result of a spirit of infirmity. Also, people who seem to be sickly, those who are always suffering from one aliment or another, are usually oppressed by a spirit of infirmity.
A sickness caused by a spirit of infirmity cannot be cured by natural medicine, or even by an operation. Many times people who have cancer will have the tumor surgically removed from one part of their body only to have it reappear somewhere else. You cannot cut out a devil! You can only cast them out!
In Matthew 9:33 it says, “And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke.” There is only one way to bring healing to a person who is afflicted by a spirit of infirmity and that is to cast it out. When the demon leaves, the sickness goes with it!
Thankfully, we have authority over demon spirits through the name of Jesus. In Luke 10:19 Jesus said, “Behold, I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Ephesians 1:21 and 2:6 tells us that we are seated with Christ in heavenly paces, “Far above all principality and power and might and dominion.” Then Philippians 2:10 tells us, “That at the name of Jesus every knew should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.”
Confession: I have authority over every spirit of infirmity in Jesus’ name!
