“When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: ‘He himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” Matthew 8:16-17
This portion of God’s Word forever settles the issue of whether or not physical healing was provided in the atonement of Jesus Christ. It is to be regretted that the translators of the Bible into English did not properly translate Isaiah 53:4, which says of Christ, “Surely He has borne our GRIEFS and carried our SORROWS; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.” The literal meaning of the Hebrew words translated as “GRIEFS” and “SORROWS” is sickness and pain.
Thankfully, Matthew could read and understand Hebrew much better than those Bible translators. Here in chapter eight of his gospel he properly translates the meaning of these two words as referring to physical sickness. Matthew states very clearly that Jesus healed ALL who were sick on the basis of Isaiah 53:4! If Isaiah 53:4 does not refer to Jesus taking our PHYSICAL SICKNESS and DISEASES on the cross, then Jesus could not have healed the sick based upon this verse of scripture. This forever settles the question of whether or not Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sin and for the healing of our body.
Most Christians, and even most ministers, believe that God does still heal the sick today. However, a large portion of them deny the fact that healing has been provided in the atonement. After all, if Jesus died on the cross for our physical healing, then that would mean that it is God’s will for everyone to be healed. After all, the cross is God’s will for everybody. Sadly, there are still many in the body of Christ that do not believe it is always God’s will to heal the sick.
James 1:17 declares, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of Lights…” In other words, everything that we receive, including physical healing, comes from God the Father. God the Father is the Source for all that we receive from God, whether it be salvation, healing or any other blessing. Everything we receive from God comes to us directly from God the Father.
However, Jesus said in John 14:6 that, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” In other words, everything that we receive from God the Father comes THROUGH the Lord Jesus Christ. It is because of Christ’s atonement that we have access to God the Father. God the Father is the SOURCE, yet Christ is the MEANS to the Source. Ephesians 2:18 declares, “For THROUGH HIM we both have ACCESS by one Spirit TO GOD THE FATHER.”
According to these scriptures a person could not receive healing from God the Father if Jesus did not provided for it through His death on the cross. After all, we do not have access to anything from God the Father unless Jesus died for us to have it! Therefore, if God does still heal the sick today, then that would mean that Jesus died on the cross for the healing of our bodies. And if Jesus died on the cross for the healing of our bodies, then that would mean that healing is God’s will for every person, because the cross is for every person!
Confession: Jesus paid for my sickness, disease and pain with His blood on the cross. Sickness no longer has a legal hold on my body. I claim my healing by faith in Jesus’ Name!
