Day 140: Jesus Is My Doctor

Day 140: Jesus Is My Doctor
May 24, 2015 Joel Grantham

“When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to King Jareb; yet he cannot cure you, nor heal you of your wound.”  Hosea 5:13

How futile is the help of man, especially when it comes to receiving healing for our body!  Sadly, our society today has grown accustomed to placing their trust for their physical health in modern medical science.  Just take a look around and you will notice that the largest buildings in most cities are hospitals.  And they are always full of people!

Have we forgotten that God Himself made a covenant of health and healing with us through the shed blood of His Son?  Have we forgotten that He revealed Himself in Exodus 15:26 as Jehovah Rophe, the Lord our healer?

Did you know that there is no instruction whatsoever in the Word of God where we are told to visit a medical doctor when we are sick.  On the contrary, instead of calling the doctor, God tells us to call the elders of the church.  (See James 5:14-15.)  If the Christian understood His covenant with God, he would have no need of modern medical science.

There was not one doctor among the people of Israel during their 40 year exodus from Egypt.  They didn’t need a doctor!  They were all healed!  (See Psalm 105:37.)  It wasn’t until the reign of King Solomon that the ancient art of man-made medicine was reintroduced to God’s people through Solomon’s Egyptian wife.  Oddly enough, this is the same time that sickness was reintroduced to the people of Israel on a wide scale.  The moment they began to trust in man for their physical health instead of placing their faith in God’s healing covenant, sickness began to dominate them.

Don’t get me wrong.  I am not against medical doctors.  They are able to help a lot of people, and for that I am thankful.  But the help that they are able to give is very limited, temporary and costly.  There is a better way!  Why is it that, even after all of the advances our generation has made in the area of medical knowledge, we still have so many sick people?  Could it be because the root cause of sickness and disease is a spiritual condition called the fall of man?  Doctors and modern medicine will never be able to eradicate sickness from this planet!   Only the blood of Jesus can do that!

In our verse today we learn that when Ephraim was sick he went to Assyria for help instead of turning to God.  Yet, just like so many of the sick today who turn to modern medicine for help, Ephraim learned that, “He cannot cure you, nor heal you of your wound.”

Is it wrong to visit the doctor?  I am not saying it is.  It is wrong, however, to put your faith for healing in the doctor.   Remember, your doctor is only a man.  His knowledge and ability is limited.  Jesus, however, is unlimited.  He has promised health and healing to you!  Why not make Jesus your doctor today and trust Him for your healing!

Confession:  Jesus is my doctor.  My trust is in You Lord for my health and healing.
