Day 138: It’s Not The Food

Day 138: It’s Not The Food
May 24, 2015 Joel Grantham

“And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies.”  Daniel 1:15

Under the Law of Moses God gave the children of Israel some very strict dietary rules.  Not only were they not allowed to eat pork or certain kinds of seafood, but they were also forbidden from eating meat unless the blood had been drained out properly during the time of its killing.  For this reason, Daniel and his three friends chose not to defile themselves by eating the food provided to them by King Nebuchadnezzar, asking instead to be fed with only vegetables and water.

Concerned that he would fall out of favor with the king if Daniel and his associates were not healthy and strong, the chief eunuch put in charge over their care agreed to a ten day trial period in which time Daniel and his friends would eat nothing but vegetables and drink only water.  If after ten days their appearance was not as healthy as those who ate the food provided by the king, they would be forced to submit to eating the food that everyone else was eating.

Well, after ten days something amazing happened.  The Bible says that they appeared HEALTHIER and FATTER than those who ate the food provided by the king.  God had honored them with health because they were willing to honor and obey His Word.

While good eating habits are certainly important to a healthy life, there is more to this story than that!  Daniel and his friends were not made healthy because of the food that they ate.  Impossible!  No one gains weight on vegetables and water.  However, that’s exactly what the Bible says happened to Daniel!  It is very clear that their health was supernatural!

Many times people put their faith for their health in the food that they eat.  This is wrong.  Our faith should not be in food, but in God.  God has made a covenant of health and healing with His people.  God’s people should always be healthier than the people of the world.  Remember in Deuteronomy 7:14-15 God said, “You shall be blessed ABOVE ALL PEOPLES…And the Lord will take away from you all sickness…”

Confession: I have a covenant of supernatural health and healing with God through Christ Jesus His Son.
