Day 132:  Who Are You Trusting In?

“Go up to Gilead and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt; in vain you will use many medicines; you shall not be cured.”  Jeremiah 46:11

In the ancient world a balm (a cream or ointment) was commonly used to treat various kinds of ailments.  Here the Prophet Jeremiah commands the sick to go up to Gilead and take the balm.  Earlier in Jeremiah 8:22, Jesus is revealed to us as the “Balm Of Gilead”, our Great Physician.  Only through Christ can we find complete and total healing from every sickness and every disease.

The Prophet Jeremiah calls the person who uses many medicines, instead of going to the Balm of Gilead, a “daughter of Egypt.”  Egypt, in the Bible, is used to symbolize the world (those who are lost in their sins).  Here we can clearly see the difference between how those who have a covenant relationship with God act in times of sickness and how those who do not have a covenant with God act.

Every time the Bible mentions going to Egypt, it always says that you, “Go DOWN to Egypt.”  However, every time the Bible mentions going to Jerusalem, or in this case to Gilead, it always says that you “Go UP.”  Satan’s ways are always DOWN and God’s ways are always up!

Romans 12:2 admonishes us saying, “And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”  We know and understand that God doesn’t want His children to be like the world in their sin.  But God also does not want us to be like the world in their sickness and disease either!

Psalm 60:11 declares, “Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless.”  Sadly, the only thing that those who are in the world have to turn to when they are sick is the help of man.  Those who are without Christ are dependent upon the remedies of man to cure them when they are sick.  Unfortunately, even doctors with all of their knowledge and medicines come up very short when it comes to bringing healing to your body.

While I am thankful for the help that doctors can bring to those who are suffering, I still feel sorry for those who TRUST in their doctors and in medicine.  Psalm 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”  Nowhere in the Bible does it ever say that God uses medicine and doctors.  You will not find one Scripture where God tells His people to go to the doctor when they are sick.  Modern medical science is nothing more than the wisdom of man.  It is man’s attempt to fix a problem that only God can fix.  Modern medicine can help, but the help that it gives is very limited.  Only through faith in the name of Jesus can we be made completely whole!  (See Acts 3:16.)

So, who are you trusting in?  Are you trusting in your doctor and his medicine, or are you trusting in the name of the Lord?  Remember what God says here in Jeremiah 46:11, “In vain you will use many medicines; you shall not be cured.”   Medicine CANNOT heal you!  Only God can do that!

Confession:  Jesus is the Balm of Gilead.  He is my Great Physician.  I am trusting completely in Him for my healing!
