Day 102: Qualifying For The Promise

Day 102: Qualifying For The Promise
April 11, 2015 Joel Grantham

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.  For by me your days will be multiplied, and years of life will be added to you.”  Proverbs 9:10-11

There are over 1,522 “ifs” in God’s Word.  All of the promises of God are conditional.  When we meet the conditions, we qualify for the promises. The promise of long life has at least two conditions.  God’s Word says that in order to qualify for long life, we must honor our father and mother (Deuteronomy 5:16) and we must fear the Lord.

What does it mean to fear the Lord?  In Deuteronomy 17:19 God’s Word says, “…that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes.”  To fear the Lord means to obey God’s commandments.  It doesn’t mean to be scared of God.  It means to reverence Him and to be in awe of Him.  Psalm 33:8 declares, “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.”  It means that you respect and honor Him so much that you obey His commandments.

A person who has the fear of God in their heart will not live in sin because Proverbs 16:6 says, “By the fear of the Lord one departs from evil.”  Proverbs 3:7 says, “Fear the Lord, and depart from evil.”  Those who fear the Lord HATE SIN because Proverbs 8:13 says, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.”

Sadly the fear of the Lord is lacking in the church today.  Instead of coming out from among the world and being separate, we have joined the world.  The average Christian looks like the world, talks like the word and acts like the world.  Christians are watching the same movies, listening to the same music and doing the same things as the unbeliever.

The fear of the Lord will cause you to obey God’s commandments and to live a holy life.  It is not enough to just be saved to walk in the promises of God, you must also fear the Lord.  1 John 3:22 says, “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, BECAUSE WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”

If you have fallen short in this area, first repent of your sin, and secondly ask God to give you a heart that truly fears Him.

Prayer:  Lord, create in me a heart that will fear You and keep Your commandments.  Cause me to love the things that You love and to hate the things that You hate.  I thank you for giving me a long and healthy life to serve you with. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
